New York City
BBW New York: Hook Up Late in a City With All-Night Trains
A no-strings meet with BBW, a big man or an admirer, three parks for the hello and a subway that never shuts.
All night
The subway runs all night, so the evening can too
Fat F-Buddy handles the who: BBW, big men and their admirers, with casual said out loud from the start. New York handles the rest, and its best trick is trains that never clock off.
What it means. The MTA runs the subway 24 hours a day, every day, so the system is open however late the evening goes.
What it doesn't. Every line running, or running the same way. Not every line runs all night and overnight routing differs, so your 7 p.m. route may not be your 2 a.m. route.
What to do. Look up your trip for the hour you plan to leave, not the hour you arrive, and meet near a line you've checked. Paying is a tap of a contactless card, phone or wearable.
Of the six US cities on this site, only Chicago also runs trains all night, on its Red and Blue Lines. See the Chicago guide, or all six on the USA page.
Three parks for an easy first hello
Each one is public, busy and easy to leave, which is all a first hello needs. The first-meet guide has the rest of the plan.
The High Line
A park through west Manhattan from Chelsea to Hudson Yards, with no entry charge, run by Friends of the High Line with NYC Parks. It stays open later from April through November than in winter. One stretch has a closure notice posted, so check it before you choose a meeting point.
Bryant Park
Midtown, between 40th and 42nd Streets behind the main library. The Bryant Park Corporation runs it with NYC Parks, with seating at no charge, a reading room, a lawn and daily activity hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Brooklyn Bridge Park
85 acres over 1.3 miles of waterfront, including DUMBO, with Jane's Carousel and the Fulton Ferry landing. It's open from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. every day, so a daytime hello can roll into an evening by the water.
When the hello goes well, NYC Tourism's picks for the evening are the Theater District, Greenwich Village around Washington Square Park, and Williamsburg and DUMBO in Brooklyn.
Walk-in testing, insurance or not
The city's own clinics see you without insurance or the ability to pay, with fees on a sliding scale, and two of them take walk-ins every weekday.
- Chelsea
- 303 9th Avenue, Manhattan. Open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and walk-ins are accepted.
- Fort Greene
- 295 Flatbush Avenue Extension, Brooklyn. The same weekday hours and the same walk-in policy.
- More city sites
- Central Harlem, Morrisania, Jamaica and Corona have city clinics too.
- Callen-Lorde
- A not-for-profit sexual health option, with a Chelsea site at 356 West 18th Street.
Any of these clinics, or your own doctor, can say which tests fit. CDC's national locator and testing advice are on the USA page, and the safer casual sex guide covers condoms and testing.
Coming in from the suburbs or New Jersey
The city holds 8.6 million people, but the metro area the Census Bureau names for New York, Newark and Jersey City holds 20.1 million (estimates for July 1, 2025). With more than half of them outside the city, let whoever has the longest trip home choose the finish time.
The Long Island Rail Road's 11 branches and 126 stations stretch out to Montauk, on 24/7 schedules that vary. PATH trains to New Jersey and the Staten Island Ferry run around the clock too, though not every PATH route runs at every hour.
Fat F-Buddy is a browser site you can add to your home screen, and profiles show only your nearest town or city. See the features page and BBW near me.
When to walk the High Line, and when to head indoors
January is cold, June to September is warm, and rain turns up in every month: July is the wettest, February the driest.
| Month | Average high | Average low | Rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 39.5 F | 27.9 F | 3.64 in |
| February | 42.2 F | 29.5 F | 3.19 in |
| March | 49.9 F | 35.8 F | 4.29 in |
| April | 61.8 F | 45.5 F | 4.09 in |
| May | 71.4 F | 55.0 F | 3.96 in |
| June | 79.7 F | 64.4 F | 4.54 in |
| July | 84.9 F | 70.1 F | 4.60 in |
| August | 83.3 F | 68.9 F | 4.56 in |
| September | 76.2 F | 62.3 F | 4.31 in |
| October | 64.5 F | 51.4 F | 4.38 in |
| November | 54.0 F | 42.0 F | 3.58 in |
| December | 44.3 F | 33.8 F | 4.38 in |
Rain falls at about 3.2 to 4.6 inches a month all year, so the plan that works in any month is a daylight place with a covered fallback close by.
Three things people ask about New York
Does the New York subway really run all night?
Yes. The MTA runs the subway 24 hours a day, every day, though not every line runs all night and overnight routing differs. Look up your route for the hour you'll leave, and the evening can run as late as you both like.
Where can I get a walk-in STI test in New York City?
The NYC Health Department's sexual health clinics in Chelsea and Fort Greene take walk-ins Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with sliding-scale fees and care available without insurance. The city also runs clinics in Central Harlem, Morrisania, Jamaica and Corona.
How do I get home if I live outside the city?
Look up the last service on your exact route first. The MTA says the Long Island Rail Road runs 24/7 on varying schedules, so a train existing is not the same as a train arriving soon. Agree the finish time around whoever has the longest trip.
If the hello goes well, the subway's still running
Say what you want, suggest a park, and let a good evening run as long as it likes.
